Can't install "Kasparov Chessmate" on iBook G4

Hello!

I have an iBook G4, 14", A1055, that I used a CD to install a copy of "Kasparov Chessmate" on...works like a charm!

However: when I tried to use the same CD to install the game on my other iBook G4, a 14", A1134, I could not: Disk Utility said there was a minor problem, but could not repair it. I tried a stand-alone CD player, and received the same message.

So: may I transfer a copy of this Chess game from one G4 to another G4, and, if so, how. Failing this, is it OK to find a copy of this software online, and go from there...copyright issues, perhaps?!

Oh: I do have a Firewire cable that will connect the G4's, if that helps.

Finally: if all else fails, is there a Good, fairly strong Chess program that works on the A1134?

As always: Thanks, everyone!

Michael.

Hello, & thanks for the help. As it turns out, I cloned the original Apple HDD to an mSATA 64GB "Dogfish" SSD using Carbon Copy, and it seems to be OK: I have run Disk Utility several times on the SSD, and all looks OK.

It would be best to check the health of the SSD. Can you connect this SSD externally to Intel computer? If so, then if the Intel computer is a Mac running macOS 10.6+ you can use DriveDx. If the other computer is running Windows or Linux, then you can use GSmartControl. Post the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper. It would be nice to know where you received the Disk Utility error in your original post.

So: if we assume that the SSD is OK, what's a good way to transfer the game that's on one iBook G4, to another iBook G4...assuming, that there is an 'easy' way?

Does the game have an installer or do you just drag & drop it onto the Applications folder?

Oh--while I'm here, another Question: I have a MacBook A1181 running Snow Leopard. I have an Official, 'Real' Install DVD. I have bought an HDD with OS X 10.7.5 installed from a reputable ( very much so! ) Company, and I do not know how to install this copy of Lion on to the MacBook: when I plug the HDD in with the USB it came with, I see the Lion icon on my Desktop...now, what do I do, to end-up with an A1181 running Lion??

I highly recommend you just stick with macOS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. At least with Snow Leopard you have access to Rosetta to run PPC apps which may allow you to use the TenFourFox web browser which is a backported version of the current Firefox browser for use on PPC systems. Plus macOS 10.7 Lion has a severe unpatched vulnerability where you don't want the system to be connected to the Internet. I don't recall the details, but we were banned from using Lion on our organization's network.

If you do want to use Lion anyway is the drive a full install of Lion or is it a bootable USB installer?

Then again: if this turns out to be a complex operation, I'll be happy to Give Up (!), and just try to find another, fairly strong chess program that'll be happy on the iBook G4. I use another PC to play on-line Chess, so the iBook is simply for Fun!

Thanks again.

I did just send the Seller this same question, and I'm sure they will soon respond...Bless their Heart, but I'm pretty-sure they thought I knew enough about Apple to accomplish this ( simple?? ) task...nope!

Hello again, & thanks for all your help: I appreciate it!

I've pretty-much decided to find another chess program for the iBook G4 in question; I have the game successfully installed and running on my other 14" iBook, and that seems OK. I'm learning that some things are simply too much effort , and that it's 'best' to move on to different--and perhaps, better!--things.

Thanks also for your 'Heads-Up' @ OS X Lion...I had not heard of any issues with this system, beyond some that showed up on earlier Builds, and that seem to have been addressed quite well by the final Update, the 10.7.5 ( Client Combo ). Granted, these older operating systems **are** Old, and we need to be aware of their potential shortcomings.

It's always fun to Post here, and impressive to see the assistance that's so generously offered...thanks!

Sincerely, Michael.
