Ipad pro 10.5 fast charger?

So haven't used an ipad for a while and getting a bit confused. I can see lots of chargers, that range from 12w to 87W chargers. Am I right to assume that any charger from 29w and upwards, should charge my ipad pro fast? I have come across a Apple 61W USB-C Power Adapter (A1718) and Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter (A1719), so should I assume that the 87W one, will charger my ipad pro 10.5 much faster?

It’s not quite that simple...

Your iPad Pro 10.5” supports USB PD (Power Delivery) Fast Charging. When your iPad is connected to a PD-compliant Power Adapter, the iPad can charge at its maximum supported 18W charging rate (2.0A@9V or 1.5A@12V). Using a USB PD Power Adapter with a higher power rating will serve no useful benefit, but will do no harm; a normally functioning iPad will not draw more power than it is capable of using to safely charge its battery.

When using a standard USB Power Adapter, the iPad will only charge at 12W maximum rate (2.4A@5V).

Not all Power Adapters are USB PD-compliant. Some use a different standard - “QC” (Quick Charge). Apple devices do not support the QC Standard.

Popular choices of Power Adapters for charging your iPad Pro 10.5 are the 30W or 20W Apple Power Adapters. Both these and other Apple Power Adapters are perfectly suitable for your iPad. As previously outlined, higher wattage Power Adapters serve no benefit to your iPad - but may be useful if you have other devices that can derive benefit from a higher powered device.

For example, I routinely use a mophie PowerStation 3XL when away from my home office to power/recharge my iPad. I use an Apple 30W Power Adapter to Fast Charge my iPad from AC Power, but also use this Power Adapter to Fast charge the PowerStation which can accept the full output from the Power Adapter.

Simple?

Assuming from your timezone that you are in the UK, to Fast Charge your iPad Pro 10.5”, chose either:

  • 30W USB-C Power Adapter (recommended)

https://store.apple.com/uk/xc/product/MY1W2B/A

  • 20W USB-C Power Adapter (smaller with folding pins)

https://store.apple.com/uk/xc/product/MHJF3B/A

As USB PD (Power Delivery) Power Adapters have a USB-C connection, you will also require Lightning to USB-C cable - available as either a 1m or 2m length:

  • USB-C to Lightning Cable (1m)

  • USB-C to Lightning Cable (2m)

The Apple 61W Power Adapter is not listed as being compatible with the iPad Pro.

Whilst the Apple 30W and 20W Power adapters have assurance of compatibility with your iPad, the same cannot be said for the 61W; use at your own risk. If your iPad is damaged, given the cost of the iPad versus that of the Power Adapter, using an incompatible Power Adapter may be a very expensive cost saving.

Consider also that the 61W is considerably larger and more bulky.
