Mail deletion with Big Sur upgrade

I upgraded from Mojave to Big Sur 11.2.3 on my iMAC (2015). Two issues occurred concerning Mail.

  1. Only the existing accounts were transferred over to Big Sur (one of which was a Google internet account) and I couldn't add another one of my Google internet accounts. The result was always: "THIS COUNT ALREADY EXISTS" with only "OK" as an option for moving forward. Actually, I am now thankful that the account was not connected, because of the second problem below.
  2. The transferred account mentioned above all seemed OK - I could send and receive messages etc. However, I recently noticed that all my trash and archived messages had been deleted - not only on my Mac but (as for Eric Apple) also on my emails provider's site (Google in my case). No other email supplier accounts have been affected. All the evidence points to the upgrade of Big Sur.

This is a serious problem: 5 years of saved emails have suddenly disappeared. Eric Apple and others reported this issue 3+ months ago, and it appears that nothing has been done about it.

If there is a fix for this problem then it should be advertised and made immediately available to all Big Sur users. No one should be upgrading to Big Sur until the issue is fixed.

Hey there KoFuMi,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand you’re having a few issues issues with Mail in macOS Big Sur. We’ll be happy to help with this.

To verify, for the account with missing trash and archived messages, is this a POP account? You may want to try recovering your messages using the following tool:

As for being unable to add a second Gmail account, boot into safe mode and see if you can add your account there. Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS and this could help:

We hope this helps. Take care.
