Mac keyboard has worked for years but now won’t respond. Replaced batteries correctly but can’t log in to machine without a password entered with the keyboard ;(

You can't. Get an inexpensive 3rd party keyboard, PC or Mac, or a new Apple wireless keyboard that has rechargeable batteries. Keyboards and mice do give up the ghost at times.
