Apple watch won't communicate with iMac

I get a message saying, "Your Mac was unable to communicate with your Apple Watch," when I check the box "Use your watch to unlock apps and your Mac" in the security and privacy app. The Watch is communicating with my iPhone and my iPhone is unlocked.

I have an iPhone XR that I just got brand new, and my new Apple Watch SE just arrived yesterday. Both are running 7.0.1. My MacBook Pro is running Catalina 10.15.7. As I try to select my watch, it does nothing for a couple minutes then pops up "Your Mac was unable to communicate with your Apple Watch." My watch is unlocked and on my wrist, and my iPhone is unlocked. I am roughly 18 inches from my MacBook.

use watch to open mac I have used my Apple Watch to open my MacBook Pro for several years. I recently updated both my iPhone (iOS 13) and Apple Watch (6.0). Now my MacBook can't communicate with my watch. Is there a setting I'm missing?
