External CD Drive Not Recognized

I have an Apple external CD Drive that works fine on IMac running Sierra.

On my MacBook Pro running Catalina it is not recognized.

Tried resetting SMC per older thread - didn't help.

tried two different USB-USB-C cables, no difference.

Thanks

If you put a disc in the drive is it recognized then?

Are all of these checkboxes checked in the Finder's General preferences:

If still unrecognized boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and check again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Hi hughfromvancouver,

It sounds like you're connecting an external drive, but it's not being recognized by the newer operating system. We're glad you've joined us in Apple Support Communities, and we can provide some assistance.

Let's follow the information in If you don’t see a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray drive on Mac. This might help to answer your topic.

We hope that helps with your question and take care!
