Gmail on MacBook Pro installation problems

On my MacBook Pro, Gmail through the Apple Mail app would not work properly. I deleted and tried to reinstall Gmail on same and can't "authenticate." Anyone else having this issue? Im running Catalina iOS, have other email accounts installed through Apple Mail app, but can't get Google Help and can't find a solution.
