Internal Speakers on MacBook Air not working when plugging in external mic.

Internal speakers stop working on my mac as soon as I plug in external mic. I go to Sound Settings--> Output and select Internal Speakers. Still nothing. Any thoughts? As soon as I disconnect the external mic, internal speakers work again. Help! Seems like a bug.

I'm using MacOS Catalina (v 10.15.7) on a MacBook Air early 2014 version.

Hello maddenkm1! Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.

We understand that when you connect your Mic to your audio port on your Mac, audio stops coming out of your speakers. We'd like to look into this with you to see how we can help.

The audio port for your Mac is considered a Headphone port, as seen here: MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014) - Technical Specifications

However, let's check to see if we can get your speakers working with your mic connected. Are you using a two ring 3.5 mm jack? If so, let's try a three ring 3.5 mm jack to see if that makes a difference.

If the issue still persists, it's possible that you may need to connect your mic to the USB port with the use of an adapter. The following resource has more information about the audio ports for your Mac: About the audio ports on Mac

Make it a great day!

Hey maddenkm1!

According to the Blue - Yeti Support page, your Mac should be compatible, and this should function as a plug and play device. You'll want to make sure your Sound settings match up with what's listed on their page. If they match, you can try restarting your Mac to see if that makes a difference.

There are also options to reset the SMC and NVRAM for your Mac to see if that helps, too. The following articles can help. Try your Blue Yeti mic after each reset:

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

If the issue persists after these resets, you may consider reaching out to Blue Support to look into this further. You can connect with them with the following resource: Blue Microphones

Cheers!

So, to be clear, this is an external mic that connects via the USB port. When I plug it into the USB port, I get a message that both my mic and my speakers are defaulting to this newly plugged-in mic (which is a Blue Yeti). The problem is that the mic doesn't have a speaker! So I hear nothing. When I go to my System Preferences and go to Sound Soundings and Output, like I said originally, even when I switch back to Internal Speakers, nothing changes and I still can't hear anything. I can't hear anything until I unplug the external mic from the USB, at which point the Internal Speakers work again.
