I started a cover page in pages formatted as an image page on 11x17, I emailed doc to myself exported from pages in PDF form. Opened in Paint Pro to add curved text. Exported as PDF sent back to email and when i tried to open it said document not supported.......I was under the impression that pages supported PDF docs........Id really like to save this piece as I got a whole half a day into it by now.

Pages will accept a .pdf doc as an inserted image. In Pages, that object is scaleable to fill a page.
