Startup only to shut down? iMac 2020

Hello! I have a 27 inch iMac from 2020 that I just got last week. Yesterday I noticed some peculiar behavior when I restarted the computer.

I had just finished installing some software and I restarted the computer, as it was required. I got up and let the computer restart and go to the login screen. I was finished using the computer and just left it on the login screen. The computer was across the room from me. About ten minutes later the computer went dark. I thought it went to sleep, but I tried to click on the mouse and keyboard and got no response. It was then I realized that the computer shut down completely. I got concerned and looked up the problem on the internet. I did not find my exact issue but saw that similar issues were solved by resetting the SMC. So I tried that and then I logged on to my desktop and restarted again. The same thing happened, but I also noticed before it shut down, I saw a message saying that if I was having problems signing in, to press the power button and another key (forget which one) to boot into recovery.

I contacted Apple and asked if this was normal behavior for a new model iMac (I had previously owned older models). They didn’t seem to know what I was talking about and proceeded to suggest that I reinstall Big Sur. Which I did. The issue still existed. Then they suggested that I do a fresh install of Big Sur. Before I did, I checked to make sure it wasn’t anything plugged into the computer. It wasn’t. So I did a fresh install. I have yet to see if the problem exists still as I have yet to log into my desktop and restart. But so far, no issues.

I only noticed this behavior after restarting fresh. The iMac did not shut down for me under any other circumstance. What do you think about this?

Turns out I didn’t need to do the NVRAM reset. I tested (finally) after yesterday’s fresh install of Big Sur. The problem did not reoccur! I retested again and same thing. I’ll keep an eye on things, but I feel that the fresh install did the trick.

Thank you so much for all the advice and help.

I don't see anything, other than there is no backup. At the very least you should ALWAYS have a time machine backup.

If you have any external peripherals connected by wires such a scanner, printer, camera, etc.. please disconnect all of them including if you use a hub to connect them to the computer and then reset the NVRAM and restart in Safe mode

Then connect each external device 1 by 1 and test each until the computer shuts down. If it's a peripheral that will find the culprit.

Another option, if you bought the computer from Apple you have 2 weeks to return it for any reason and you may want to exercise that option.

Good to hear about your TM backup, please leave it plugged in and turned on 24/7 unless you are testing like I advised above.

Let us know what happens after the NVRAM reset.

I don't know what BBY's policy is either, but I think they'll take care of you within 2 weeks.

Also, you can always call AppleCare again and talk to someone else and let them know what you have tried for troubleshooting. If they cannot pinpoint it then take the computer back to BBY.

I actually do have a time machine backup. I just didn’t reattach my external hard drive from when I unattached all my devices yesterday to try to isolate the problem. In fact, the only thing I didn’t try was resetting the NVRAM.

Like I said, this only happened when I restarted and left the screen on login and after about ten minutes. No other time. I bought the iMac at Best Buy. I don’t know what the return policy is there. I would hate to return it if you don’t see a problem, though...
