How do I forget xfinitywifi network on iOS?

I used to use the public "xfinitywifi" networks on my iPhone when I was an Xfinity customer, but I have switched to a different ISP now. However, the "xfinitywifi" (and "XFINITY") networks still show up on my iPhone under "My networks", and my phone is constantly auto-connecting to it, which has the impact of instantly disrupting my internet connection.

Unlike every other network on my iPhone, there is no option to "Forget this network" (which seems super scammy). I have turned off "Auto-join" dozens of times, but it keeps reconnecting -- I think because it's constantly finding new "xfinitywifi" networks.

I contacted Xfinity support and they were... less than helpful. All they did was pointed me to the same support article that said to deselect "auto-join" and then ignored me and logged off when I reiterated that that didn't work and that I actually want to forget the network.

I have tried:

  • de-selecting auto-join (many times)
  • restarting phone
  • Reset Network Connections (forgot all my other networks, but xfinitywifi persists)

I have an iPhone XR running iOS 14.4.1

Any ideas?

iPhone XR, iOS 14

Reset Network Settings remove all “knowledge” of all Wi-Fi networks. A It will not connect to any networks after doing that unless you manually reconnect. It will still LIST all networks it sees, but it will not connect to any of them. You should also go to Settings/Wi-Fi, tap on Ask to Join Networks, and verify that it is off or Ask.

By chance do you still have an xfinity profile on the phone? Go to Settings, Scroll to the bottom, and look just below VPN. Do you see Profiles? If you do, tap on it, tap on the xfinity profile, and delete it. The other possibility is if you have a Mac that still lists the Xfinity Wi-Fi network.

Ah, no luck: I checked earlier and just checked again now and neither XFINITY nor xfinitywifi are in my "Preferred Networks" on my Mac

I do not have a profile -- previously addressed above, in response to sberman: "I don't see "Profiles & Device Management" under Settings > General"

Done

I have a Mac, but when I go to Open Network Preferences --> Advanced, I do not see xfinitywifi or XFINITY listed in my "Preferred Networks." Is there somewhere else I should check?

After I Reset Network Settings last time, xfinitywifi and XFINITY continued to show up under "My Networks", even though, for example, my home wifi network had been forgotten. I will try resetting network settings again, and cross my fingers.

If it says join this network you are not connected to it.

Yes, I know that. This is after I disconnected from it (again). For clarity, I'm attaching screen-shots of when I'm connected to it.

Whether or not I'm connected to it, it does not give me the option to "forget this network." Do you see that in my screenshots? My question is: how do I forget this network, when there is no button to "forget this network"?

Thank you for your willingness to help, but please trust me that I'm not just making this up, nor grossly incompetent. Those screenshots are what I see when I click the "i" after connecting to xfinitywifi. Because I no longer have an Xfinity account, being connected to xfinitywifi means I cannot access the internet (eg. music stops, and if I open a browser it directs me to sign in to an Xfinity account). This is incredibly frustrating.

My phone automatically connects to xfinitywifi regularly, and when it does, there's no "forget this network" button. Perhaps the attached screenshot provides a bit more information: "XFINITY" and "xfinitywifi" are shown under "My Networks." (blacked out the name of my home wifi for privacy)

Simple question: how do I remove them?

Mar 30, 2021 2:05 PM in response to misterkatz

I just went through with Reset Network Settings, and as soon as my phone restarted, it automatically connected to xfinitywifi again. Note: it's clear that the reset worked, because I had to enter the password for my home wifi again.

I had even set "Ask to Join Networks" to "Ask" before the reset, yet my phone didn't ask before connecting to xfinitywifi -- despite it still showing that it's set to "Ask".

How is this even possible?

Screenshots taken immediately after the reset network settings completed:

1) My wifi settings screen immediately after resetting network settings, showing that my phone has joined xfinitywifi

2) When I click the "i" next to xfinitywifi, as I'm now connected to it

”Connected to it”? Are you sure? Check the icon just to the left of the battery in the upper right of your two screenshots. Note the “LTE” in the second one.

I’m not sure what this means or why it happened, but it does seem significant.

Yes, I'm sure. It may have just been that I took the screenshot too quickly after it joined, and so the icon hadn't changed yet. I can tell you from the several times this happens to me per day that typically the icon does show the wifi connection when it's connected to xfinitywifi

Lawrence Finch wrote:

On that screen turn off Auto Join.

Lawrence, as I mentioned in my initial post, I have turned off Auto Join dozens of times. I do it every time my phone connects to xfinitywifi.

As far as I can tell from my research, the problem is that that only prevents my phone from joining that specific xfinitywifi, so as soon as my phone comes across a new instance of xfinitywifi, it again auto-connects. Xfinity is predatory, and automatically broadcasts this public xfinitywifi network from the router of every person who has Xfinity wifi in their home or business, unless they know how to turn it off. So there are hundreds of instances of xfinitywifi just in my neighborhood.

So, again: I just need to get my phone to forget the xfinitywifi network / remove it from "My Networks". How?
