Some apps say no internet connection

Hi. Turning the vpn off is an ok workaround, but unless these apps are geo-restricted in some way, why, exactly, are these apps not working?

my Amazon app on iOS 16.1 says “no internet” when I try to check my orders. This was not a problem for me until 16.1, which fixed some things but apparently broke others; the app is still the same, the vpn and server are the same - but 16.1 installed and now I have to disable vpn to connect to the Amazon app. I use a paid vpn for security and to protect transactions, not to access shows from different countries. This should not affect the shopping app. So. Did 16.1 mess up the DNS settings or something else. Because the iOS upgrade is the only variable that has changed.

I just encountered the exact same issue on a 2018 iPad Pro with iPad OS 16. The culprit proved to be Ivacy VPN app - which is rather confusing as I had the app installed for years without issue.

At least I didn’t have to remove OpenVPN - and before people here get upset I’m using it to connect to my office and home local networks from the internet, so for its intended purpose.

So, for me, it was the VPN trying to connect. Apparently, I must've forgotten to turn it off and it ran out of space allowed....thus, trying to connect, but unable to.

How did you find it and delete it?

Me too. It is a new iPhone 14 plus . I have tried removing VPN and it did not work. I do not want to remove VPN for security reason . There had to be a better solution.

I am also getting this problem, have restarted my phone and router and checked for VPN which says I do t have any set up?! Any other advice? This just started yesterday!

You would've had to intentionally install it. It's not something that comes with the phone. You would go to the app and delete it like you would any other.

The recent upgrade fix the problem.

Go to settings and search for VPN. If connected, disconnect.

The same thing happened to me. I drove 40 miles to the nearest Apple Store, and the staff fixed it in about 30 seconds. I have a third-party VPN on my 13, and the genius bar member told me the phone already has a VPN, and sometimes the software conflicts.

It wasn't VPN my new service provider had automatically put on an 18 limit. Meant I couldn't access my beer apps! When this was removed all worked well.

I think it’s disgraceful that the last six months all the apps or at least many of them will not work without an Internet connection. I travel a lot and then I don’t have Internet and my Google Maps, which I need doesn’t work and neither does anything else if this persists, then this is the last iPhone I will buy.

Google Maps downloads maps as you need them. If you don’t have an Internet connection it can’t download them. You can get navigation apps that store their entire database on the phone. That’s what you need.

And most apps are internet gateways, not standalone apps.

What I need is for it to work like it did six months ago and I was happy. If Apple constantly wants your location because they are greedy, then screw them. An iPhone where you can’t play games Use the apps read the BBC stories is worthless, you have to constantly connect to the Internet which is ridiculous.
