Mirroring - turn off MacBook display

When using an external monitor with a MacBook, how can I turn off the MacBook's display and use only the external? I think that using both puts too much stress to the MacBook, am I right?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.13

I used to do that with a MacBook in clamshell mode.
