Watch Data Plan?

My teenage son wants an Apple watch. He has an iPhone so do we need a data plan for the watch? I can't find a clear answer on-line. Thank you in advance.

You can get a GPS only model for him and then no additional subscription is required. Only the cellular models support their own mobile data plans.

Apple Watch Series 6 data Hi, I've been looking at buying the new Apple Watch, however, I don't want to pay for a data plan as well as I don't feel I really need one if almost everything can be done via bluetooth. Apple Watch Data Plan? If I buy a series 4 or 5 apple watch do I have to get its own data plan to be able to use apps like Peloton while away from my phone. I would like to be able to run on a trail without my phone while still being able to use peloton.
