Watch Data Plan?

My teenage son wants an Apple watch. He has an iPhone so do we need a data plan for the watch? I can't find a clear answer on-line. Thank you in advance.

You can get a GPS only model for him and then no additional subscription is required. Only the cellular models support their own mobile data plans.
