My Mac mini (2018; 6-Core Intel i7) stopped to use the camera and speakers in my Apple Thunderbolt Display 27".

My Mac mini (2018; 6-Core Intel i7) stopped to use the camera and speakers in my Apple Thunderbolt Display 27". I have tried to reset the SMC. Once the Mac mini starts up it shows the camera and speakers in the system report. But once an app tries to use them - they are gone. It work fine a day ago.

Hey perhoeg,

Thanks for trying the NVRAM reset.

Next, we'd recommend testing to see if the same issue occurs in safe mode. This article explains how to start to safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac

Thanks!

Hey jod_apple,

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried to reset NVRAM. But the result is the same.

I also tried to reset SMC with the same result - unfortunately.

After each start of the computer, I can see (in the system report) that the Mac mini has found the camera and speakers in the Thunderbolt Display (It is also displayed in the sound icon under the system setting). But once I start FaceTime, the green light next to the camera in the display blinks one time, and then FaceTime reports that no camera is available.

So is there another way of getting the Mac mini to work as it used to do (a few days ago) ?

I tried to connect the Thunderbolt Display to my MacBook Pro (using the same cable as used with the Mac mini). Now everything works fine (built-in camera, speakers and microphone). The MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) runs the macOS Big Sur version 11.2.3.

So the issue must lie in either the Mac mini or the latest version for the macOS (I use version 11.2.3 - macOS Big Sur) - or both combined.

What could I try to solve the problem ?

Friendly greetings

Hi Leanne_68,

I tried to reset NVRAM and start in safe mode. Now the system information tells me that the camera in the screen is identified. When I start FaceTime, it actually uses the camera. But when I move, the picture jumps several times before it again shows the picture. So it is not completely working.

In safe mode there is no sound neither from the speaker in the Mac mini nor from the speakers in the screen.

What can I try next?

I tried to connect the screen to my MacBook Pro again (having exactly the same software and apps as the Mac mini). Here the camera and speakers in the screen works without any problem.

Thank for helping solving the problem!
