Please use information in "About this Mac" under the Apple menu, to let us know
the exact build model MacBook/Air ~ and the brand/model of Hub you have.
In so doing, the hope is, arrive at knowing what connections your MacBook/Air uses.
And to help you get the right one ~ to match the ports; or get proper adapters, etc.
• Identify your MacBook Air model - Apple Support
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201862
Information at Apple Support in this article may also help identify your Mac.
Tech Specs and detailed production model years are in the above, to help.
Try and match the nearest build model year among these, by specification.
The USB Device ( Thumb Drive or USB Stick ) when plugged into the USB Hub should automatic Mount and appear on your Desktop. Double Click the Drive and whatever is on the drive should appear - If I am reading this correctly?

IF you plug the usb into the type c to usb adapter and the plug that into the macobok, what happens?
If your MacBook Air is running macOS 10.12 as indicated by the footer, then your MacBook Air is too old for USB-C connections.
See: > About This Mac in the menus. Post the model and year here.
Based on what's being reported so far, you appear to have a MacBook Air 2017 or earlier model.
These older models lack USB-C connections.
If the above is correct, you'll need a USB-A or (less common) Thunderbolt card reader. Not USB-C.
Am sure you realize - the Hub draws power to function from the computer and the USB Stick plugged into the Hub also draws power from the computer and thus the prompt to plug in the computer so as to supply power to both devices. The Hub is only and extension to the one USB-C port on the computer. In so doing, in theory, extra ports for addition devices to be used at the same time. Should the Hub ( power ) and any addition devices ( USB Thumb Drive - power ) exceed what the computer an supply - it is a No Go.
