Phone Call Quality Poor on AirPods Pro...

I bought AirPods Pro in November 2020 for my iPhone 12 Pro Max. They worked great for about 6-7 weeks. However, since the last couple of iOS updates, phone calls while using my AirPods Pro have sound/microphone issues. I can't hear people I'm speaking to. They can't hear me. Other times they hear their own voice coming through their phone instead of my voice. However, removing my AirPods Pro and just using my iPhone, the call quality is fine. The AirPods Pro work great when connected to my computer, laptop, etc., even when connected to my iPhone for anything other than phone calls.

My AirPods Pro have been to Apple for repair twice, only to have them returned to me both times with the report that they are in perfect working order. I have issues with my phone calls while using AirPods Pro about 10-15% of my calls. The only solution has been to stop using my AirPods Pro for calls when the issue arises (which is very random and annoying). I never had this issue for the first 6-7 weeks of having my AirPods Pro.

I've been through on my own and with Apple Customer Service, all the troubleshooting steps of "Forget Device", full reset of the AirPods Pro, etc. multiple times. No change. Just this morning I had another call I was on for over 10 minutes, it was working great, and then suddenly the caller could no longer hear me.

Any suggestions other than what I've already tried are greatly appreciated!

Hello,

Try this:

Open the Settings app and go to the Bluetooth section. Next to the AirPods entry on the list of devices, you should see an “i” icon inside of a circle. Tap this, then select microphone, and set it to either left, right or automatic. Try switching it back and forth.

Then, test with the Voice Memos app.

Also, see this:

Good luck.

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried it as you outlined with each AirPod Pro and the Voice Memo app. They both worked great regardless of using the Right or the Left AirPod Pro. This was not a surprise as my AirPods Pro work great other than for about 10-15% of my phone calls.

I've been through the "AirPods Pro Service Program fo Sound Issues" as recommended by Apple Support multiple times.
