Also to take into consideration is what you mean by unlock:

1) iCloud: Activation Lock - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13695 - This is a security feature so only legitimate (i.e., not stolen) redistribution of devices is possible. See: Turn off Find My iPhone Activation Lock - https://support.apple.com/HT201441 - If an activation lock was put on a device, only the owner of the account that applied the lock can remove it. Alternatively see the part at the end about getting Apple to removeh the lock, but you will have to be able to prove to their satisfaction you are the true owner.

2) Device lock: "If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled" click here --> https://support.apple.com/HT204306

The way to do this is to call Apple Support and tell them that the owner of the ipad has passed away. Get up to a senior advisor, that senior advisor will take all of your info and submit it to the icloud engineering, they will require will be the death certificate. 99.99% of the time the engineering team will be able to unlock the ipad. You will need to connect the ipad onto a windows computer that has itunes installed or a mac that has itunes preinstalled already. Using itunes you will then need to erase the ipad using what’s called Recovery Mode.

Here are the Apple support pages that outline the Activation Lock - and the only mechanisms by which it can be turned off:

Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Turn off Activation Lock – Apple Support

As you will discover, unless you are the owner of the AppleID that was last used to activate the device, you’ll not be able to defeat or bypass the Activation Lock. With documentary evidence that you are the original owner (such as sales receipt showing the serial number), Apple may be prepared to assist - otherwise they and nobody here will be able to help you.

If you have the necessary documentation, Apple have recently introduced a new portal though which you may be able to request release of an Activation Lock:

How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support & start an Activation Lock support request.

However, this isn’t necessarily the end of the story...

A close Family member or Executor, with the required supporting paperwork, can make application to Apple to be granted access to the Apple accounts of the deceased:

Without any official paperwork or info from the previous owner of this iPad, Apple WILL NOT release the activation lock on this device.

This is s dead and useless iPad to you without such information.

If this info cannot be obtained, there is nothing Apple will do to release the user activation lock.

Recycle this device at the Apple store, if Apple cannot resolve this issue.

They are the only ones that can.

Sorry.

Really.

A lawyer?

Not worth the costs and aggravation for getting such a device activated.

The costs of a lawyer and legal fees will far exceed the costs of the device.

Also, the FBI couldn't get Apple to break user Activation Lock on its own devices for law enforcement purposes.

So, what chance do you really think a lawyer is going to be able to do for you to affect some solution or you?

Just forget this device and purchase a proper iPad on your own.

You can purchase a brand new base model iPads for much less than the costs a lawyer and all of the various legai fees.

Also, Apple has more money than dirt, in its financial coffers, to fight any type of legai battles.

Especially small claims legal battles.

A lawyer will not help you, but just take/siphon more of your hard earned money away from you.

There is simply nothing to be done here.

Do what you will.

If user Activation lock was as easy as RhondaBowman is making this out to be, then having this personal data and security feature would be pretty useless as everyone with an Activation locked iOS device could do this.

And since myself and one other regular contributor have responded to this person's claims, that person has not yet responded to confirm this claim or not.

You are certainly welcome to try this approach, but do not be disappointed if this does not achieve your desired result.

I and other regular contributors here that have been here for a long time know of many of Apple's policies and without any sufficient proof to get this iPad released of the previous owner's user ID and user activation lock, Apple is not going to budge and may not be cooperative on this issue.

So, be prepared to be told that Apple will not release the user ID lock.

This random user who posted may have just posted to give you false hope.

Apple takes user and user data privacy very, VERY seriously.
