canon 'printer in use' error message

Hi

since about 3 weeks, my Canon Maxify 5400 printer has stopped to print via the AirPrint Protocol.

Message you get is 'printer in use'

It applies to MacOS 10.15.7, iOS latest version or older versions

Still can print using the canon IJ Network driver (MacOS) or Canon's tool on iOS.

Did check and restart router, switch and cable modem.

Not aware that I have changed anything in my network or changed the device configs.

Any thoughts or ideas that could help would be appreciated

Cheers

Mac Pro, macOS 10.15

Try the following in order as needed:

1 - Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support 2-3 times consecutively.

2 - boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and check again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

some more specs

did try to connect the printer local USB port and unplug from the LAN.

printer has shown busy sign when printing on the IJ Network. which was expected.

however did print using the other driver (not sure if this was there before and just popped up when USB was connected)

strange enough, system asked to update the printer driver to AirPrint, which I declined for now.

there is one common aspect, the printer driver in the IJ Network ist driver nr. 16.40.1.0, same as with the USB thing now.

the one which shows the busy sign on MacOS ist stated as printer driver 2.0

so I do suspect there is an issue with the printer driver.

Any ideas about this? How to properly view the chosen printer driver for the print process and how to figure this out on iOS?

So you've fixed the problem by using the other driver?

If there's an AirPrint fix out there I'd take it as it's a one time effort and should work for all devices.
