I removed the Apple Mail icon from the dock since I will be using Gmail and not the Apple Mail icon.
Are you using the macOS mail app or the Gmail website?

I am new to MAC, just bought it a week ago. I spend the MAIL app on the Dock bar, and logged in to my Gmail via Google.
Correction: I opened the MAIL...
Login to gmail.com & see if they show there or add them if not there.
