I am having a hard time connecting my MacBook Air with the M1 chip to a projector in a classroom. My Macbook with the Intel chip connects easily. Is there something different with this new computer? I am using an adapter. The cord from the projector is VGA with an adaptor to HDMI.

I've tried 2 different adapters to try to connect this MBA to the projector. No luck. The projector does not sense a signal as it does with my older model. Additionally, I cannot record my lectures with Kaltura Capture like I can with my old MBA.
It's frustrating because I had planned to trade in my older model, but I have to keep it to do certain functions.
Yes, it's up to date, Big Sur, 11.2.3. No problem connecting to another display using the same adapter to HDMI. Thanks for your help, but I am still frustrated that this new MBA has less functionality than my old one, and thus I cannot recycle the old one.
