Apple Pencil 2nd Generation

Has anyone been in the middle of using their pencil and it completely quit working?

I was in the middle of teaching my class when my pencil just quit working. I turned my iPad off and then back on, I have turned Bluetooth off and then back on, I have made sure that my computer was updated, and I have also unpaired my pencil and repaired it without it fixing the problem.

The weird part of the situation is that when I set it on the side of my iPad to charge it will show that my pencil is connected, but as soon as you take the pencil off to use it, the pencil disconnects.

And yes. My pencil is 100% charged.

I have had my pencil for less than 3 months and customer service was NO help. When I called the poor lady sounded so lost and had no idea what she was doing.

I am very disappointed in the pencil since I use it almost EVERYDAY in my classroom when teaching.

Your Apple Pencil is exhibiting symptoms of a dead battery - that will not accept or hold any charge.

The tiny internal Li-ion battery is susceptible to permanent/irreversible damage through being left discharged for long periods. Even some “new” pencils can exhibit signs of failure out-of-the-box if they are “old stock”. It is essential that if you have an Apple Pencil that you charge it regularly - whether used or not - so as to protect the battery from deep-discharge. Do not allow a pencil to remain in low-charge state for any period of time - as the internal battery will fail, rendering the Pencil useless.

Setting aside an unused Pencil, for extended periods, is a recipe for premature death of the Pencil battery.

A second generation Pencil should be docked with its host iPad whenever it is not being actively used- as this will optimally charge and maintain the Pencil battery.

If the Pencil Battery has failed, the only remedy is to replace the Pencil. If the battery has failed and your pencil is within its one-year warranty, you should look to having it replaced by your retailer or at an Apple Store.

I hope this information proves to be helpful in both diagnosing and resolving the problem.
