wired headphones don't work anymore after update to Big Sur

Hi,

my son has upgraded his MacBook (13'', 2020 model) to Big Sur, and since then he does not seem to be able to use his wired headphones. He connects them corectly to the laptop, but no sound is coming out. IF he uses his wireless Apple headphones they work fine, but it seems that the headphone port on his laptop is not working anymore.... any ideas anyone ?

Thanks !

I found this discussion where the user only had the issue with google meet, but not with other apps like the Music app (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252076071). Could you check various apps to see if the issue is only with some apps?

I also found this discussion that suggests a couple solutions: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252037277.

Finally there is also this article: https://pdf.wondershare.com/macos-11/fix-mac-sound-not-working.html

Yes, volume is all up. I have tried my son's headphones on my laptop, and they work perfectly.

I don't understand, it looks like the actual port does not work; if I remove the headphones, it plays nicely using the internal speakers, but as soon as I plug them and the audio goes to ' external headphones', I cannot hear anything. I can still control the volume using the volume control on the headphones, though, so they must have been 'recognised' by the system....
