MacBook Pro 2015 display issue, purple stripes

Recently I am experiencing some display issue on my 2015 MacBookPro 13 inch when streaming videos with full screen. Especially with Safari and Apple TV+ App.

At first this problem occurred with Safari playing Netflix, then PrimeVideo, and now even YouTube would have same issue when playing on full screen, purple horizontal stripes and the system just stuck, no response what so ever, even if I close the screen the backlight would still be on. I must force it to shut down by holding the power key. And yesterday I tried the TV+ App, it also have same problem when playing on full screen, if not full screen everything is fine. Temperature is ok too, when streaming without full screen the cpu temperature is around 50 Degrees C, with 0% fan.

I am running the latest OS11.2.3 Big Sur. And I did reapplied the thermal paste with MX-4 last year (old paste was dried out), but I don’t think it could be the problem.

I am aware that my MBP is 6 years old and it could have one or two issues which come with age, I just want to know if it is a hardware issue of the Iris Graphics or it’s a software problem. I tried reset NVram and SMC, sadly, those didn’t work.

From your post you’ve shown graphic anomalies when you’re viewing videos using full screen. 


You’ve also mentioned that you’ve completed some troubleshooting by resetting the NVRAM, SMC and your macOS is up-to-date.  Great work!  You can even calibrate your Mac display to see if it helps: Calibrate your Mac display 


Still not working? Here’s the next step: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac   There is a link included with the reference codes if needed. 


You also might need to have your MacBook Pro checked out by a service provider:  Mac Repair - Official Apple Support This has great information including how to start a service request and how to get ready for service.

Thanks for the update. We can understand your concern! Having your MacBook Pro checked out would be the next step to resolve your issue. Here's how to find the locations available in your area: Find how to service or repair your Mac This way you can have it checked over and given an estimate of the total cost. It will allow you to make the best decision.


If you'd like, you can still contact Apple: Apple - Support - Product Selection You've already checked so much of the troubleshooting already and there might be other items that can be explored.


Either way, you have some choices. Please move forward with which works best for you.

thank you for your reply! About screen calibration, which only create a colour profile which determines how accurate the colour will be shown, I don’t think this could help the display and system crash issue. I did the diagnostic too but as I only get a code saying I didn’t connect to the power supply (which I really didn’t), the diagnostic shows that everything is fine.

So this could be hardware issue and I must go to a AppleStore to get my MBP checked? Because of the Pandemic in Europe now it is a little bit complicated to do this. Also, as this laptop is 6 years old and definitely out of the warranty I am afraid the repair (90% chance it would need a new MoBo) would cost too much.
