Photos disappearing when trying to send them in iMessage

For the entire time that I have owned this phone (iPhone 12 Pro Max) plus some time before that (iPhone X), I keep having this issue.

I try to send a photo, I select the photo I wish to send, type up some text to go with it, and hit send. When I hit send, the text will send and the photo will disappear from the message. I have to select it again and attempt to send it. This almost always occurs when I attempt to send a photo and when it does it typically occurs 2-4 times before the message shows up in the chat and is actually sent.

It’s rather frustrating and I have no idea if there’s something that I have to changed on my end or if this is a persistent issue that Apple just has not bothered patching.
