Trade-in process

Hi, I've just ordered a new iPad online and opted for the trade-in option. However, it now occurs to me that they will want my old iPad before shipping my new one, which means that I can't transfer everything from one to the other. Is this right, or is it all based upon what is stored on the cloud?

Many thanks.

They send you the trade-in box to use for your old iPad at the same time or a day or two after your new iPad ships. You have 14 days after receiving the trade-in box to return the old iPad. You will have plenty of time to transfer data.

To put your mind at rest, these support pages should get you started with setup of your new iPad - and the methods of transferring your data from old to new iPad:

Set up your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support

Transfer data from your previous iOS device to your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support

If the donor iPad, from which you are transferring your data precedes iOS12.4, QuickStart will not be available.

“Transfer” is rather a misnomer. In reality, your data and setup is merely cloned to the new device. Nothing is moved or removed from the original device.

An alternative, if trading-in your old iPad before the new device is available, is to create either an iCloud or iTunes backup - and restore this to your new device:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch – Apple Support

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support
