iPhone XR won't stay connected to iTunes when I plug it in to my MacBook Air

I have an iPhone XR that momentarily charges when i plug it in to my MacBook Air (2014; running on High Sierra 10.13.6 and latest iTunes software). As soon as I plug it in and the iPhone prompts me to Trust this computer, it disconnects/stops charging and then reconnects/disconnects repeatedly.

I have tried original apple cables as well as aftermarket and no changes. I have zero issues plugging in and backing up my iPhone 8S and also my iPad Air. Seems to be the XR is having trouble communicating (or even just charging) when I plug in to my MacBook.

Using the same cable, I have no problem plugging my iPhone XR in to my Thinkpad and backing up/syncing to iTunes with the PC Laptop. I'd prefer not to use that method as that is my company laptop. Prefer to keep my apple products together. Any solutions or suggestions on how to correct?
