Contacts automatically adds 1+ to some phone numbers

Contacts automatically adds 1+ to some phone numbers, and then I can't text to those numbers. How do I keep it from adding the 1?

Previous answers are too vague for me to understand.

If you use iCloud for Contacts, verify the number isn't being added at this website from a computer: iCloud. HOW DO I DO THAT? How do I know if I use iCloud for contacts?

If you use any other account (like Google or Yahoo), be sure to check their appropriate websites to see if the +1 is being added. HOW DO I DO THAT? WHERE DO I GO TO CHECK THAT?

Check which default account you're using by going to Settings > Contacts > Default Account. Make sure it's the desired account you want to use and hasn't been changed. WHAT IS THE DESIRED ACCOUNT? It is listed as Gmail on my phone. Is that desired?

Hey there Parris,

We'd like to help answer your questions, along with seeing how we can resolve the issue with some of your saved phone numbers automatically adding '1+' to themselves in Contacts.

First, we'd like to answer your other questions:

  1. To check if you have iCloud Contacts enabled, you'd go to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Contacts. If it's enabled, your iPhone is currently syncing with iCloud Contacts.
  2. Regarding checking iCloud for the same issue, you'd use the link(iCloud) to log in on a computer, then check your saved contacts to see if the same issue has occurred.
  3. To check which accounts are currently syncing with Contacts, you'd go to Settings > Contacts > Accounts. You'd then tap on each account to see if the 'Contacts' option is enabled. If the option is enabled for a specific account, that means that account is syncing with Contacts. You'll want to visit each of the websites for the accounts that are syncing with Contacts to see if the same issue is occurring. For example: (Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, etc.)
  4. As you mentioned the default account is Gmail, then that will be the default account. While we recommend using iCloud, the choice of the default account will be your decision.

Moving forward with troubleshooting the issue occurring, we'd like to confirm the following to start ruling out some basics:

  1. We see you have iOS 14 installed, but the latest is iOS 14.4.2. You can verify the version number installed within Settings > General > About. Here's a link that'll show how to first back up, then Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. If you already have iOS 14.4.2 installed, this link shows how to Restart your iPhone.
  3. When you checked on the websites for the accounts that are currently syncing with Contacts, did you find the same issue occurring with '1+' added to saved phone numbers? If yes, which accounts show the same issue?

We look forward to hearing back from you about these details. Take care!
