does the activity app still work if you do not subscribe to fitness.

I am 85 and just got the Apple Watch 6. I am not interested in paying a fee for the Fitness App. Will I get any use out of the Activity app if I do not subscribe to the Fitness part of it?

Look at it this way. The Activity app has been around for several years (maybe since the first Apple Watch). Fitness+ is less than 6 months old.

The 2 can work together, but Fitness+ did not take anything away from the existing Activity app, so if you do not want to subscribe to Fitness+ you are not going to loose anything except have an Apple fitness instructor yell at you to do 'n' more reps.

I've had my Apple Watch Series 4 going on 2 years, 4 months, and I do not subscribe to anything. I track my walks, my bicycle rides, and other activities. It does not cost me anything extra.

And learning new things, always works to loosen up the mind and get you thinking of new things.

Fitness+ gets you exercise video classes

The Activity app tracks your activity, in various exercise categories. And even if you do not enable an exercise activity, the Activity app will still attempt to track your movement, some exercise, and your standing minutes (which amounts to your watch arm moving as if you were walking, even if you were not), the stairs you climbed (estimated), etc... You can also track your heart rate if you like.

As a passive exercise monitor, I've found I do more just because the Apple Watch is tracking things. You are older than me, but not enough to be my parent (that should give you an approx age range).

While I find the Activity tracking nice, my big likes about the Apple Watch are alarms, alerts, notifications on my wrist, answer (or reject junk) calls on my wrist, the weather on my wrist (I do that a lot), iMessage with my Wife on my wrist, "Hey Siri, 15 minute timer", and it tell the time and date (which I can get a dozen other ways in my home).

Thanks for the input. I think I have my answer. Just recently changed from an Android user to an iPhone user because it has an built in hearing aid program that works great with my new hearing aids. Then I saw a Zoom session on the Apple Watch 6 that got me interested in that. It is working on my 85 year old brain, but it has been fun.
