First TM Backup on New Mac Mini Not enough space error

I just got my new M1 Mac Mini with Big Sur. I have the 500GB SSD loaded. I installed a new 1TB external SSD to serve as the Time Machine. I formatted the drive and try to do the first backup. After about 15 mins the time machine stops and says it can't complete because the dive does not have enough space.

Again, the Time Machine is a new drive with 1TB available and the Mini SSD is only 500GB so there should be more than enough space. I notice that this happens with Big Sur. I have several other i-macs running Catilina and my TM is always double the size of the internal HD and I never had these issues.

Is there something going on with Big Sur and TM that is a known issue?

I have old USB HDD 320Gb drive and I created a partition of 120Gb space and select this 120Gb partition as TM Backup of my Mini M1 that has 256Gb storage and it backed up just fine on that 120Gb partition. The size of Backup is 80Gb so I have 40Gb free.

I am on Big Sur 11.2.3.

First step, right click on the Time Machine icon and select "Get Info..."

How much space does it show as being used? Need to see if in fact

TM has filled the drive.

Please post another screenshot of the external drive in Disk Utility with "Show All Devices" checked.

Looks good now, what happen when you point Time Machine to the Untitled volume.

It same exact thing. it backs up, gets t the end, and then a message saying there is not enough sapce

Hmm... maybe try getting and using a 1 or 2T External HDD for Time Machine and use the Samsung SSD for redundant bootable backups with CarbonCopyCloner.

Yea' again I feel the same pain. Personally, I was happiest in Snow Leopard, High Sierra and Mojave in that order.
