Does the iPad air 2020 have word installed, and is it good to use for university.

You can download an Microsoft Word app from the App store.
This free app will only let you read Word documents on screen sizes larger than 10.1 in.
To use for creation of documents (on any size screen) you may need a subscription to Microsoft 365.
There is now a Microsoft office app.
Only you can decide if it is suitable for you usage.
