I have opened Finder after connecting Ipad to Mac with cable, selected the ipad and set it to sync music but it gets to Step 3 and says waiting for items to copy, I can leave it for hours but nothing happens. Tried doing it from iPhone XR too but the same thing happens. Can anyone help please?
See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - Apple Community. You may well be lucky that nothing has copied, since sync is library to device, not the other way around. You likely need the help of third party tools to reclaim your media.

thank you, this is my first Mac and I am finding it a little stressful! I have ordered a flash drive to hopefully load my library onto and transfer to the Macbook. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
