I want to move an app from the Applications folder to the Launchpad. It doesn't go there automatically. The Help menu tells me that to move an app to the Launchpad, I just have to drag it to the Applications folder. But it's already in the Applictions folder. When I try to drag it out, so i can drag it back in, it just converts to an alias.

The Launch Pad is a alias of the Application folder.
You do not say what application this is giving you a problem...
third party app? do you have references...
