If you are using iCloud Photos, all metadata you add on your Mac are transferred to iCloud. Any other Mac will be showing you the same metadata, when you are viewing the photos in Photos for Mac.

The metadata will even be transferred to the iPhone, only Photos iOS cannot display them in the older versions of Photos.

This has been improved a bit in the recent system versions. An iPhone with iOS 14 will be showing you the captions you added to your photos on a Mac with macOS 11 Big Sur, if you sync the photos with iCloud Photos.
