Biometrics error 60

Hi

I used to be able to unlock my MacBook with my fingerprint, but suddenly this wasn't possible.

When I went to settings out of the 4 options available for fingerprints, only the password authentication was ticked.

Now when I try to tick the others it won't let me and I get a "biometric error 60". Any advise on how to fix much appreciated.

thanks,

Silla

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and try to reset the fingerprint from there. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Hi there silla194,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you are not able to unlock your Mac using Touch ID. “For security, you need to enter your password when you start your Mac. Sometimes you need to enter your password to continue using Touch ID. For example, users must re-enter their password every 48 hours and after five incorrect fingerprint attempts.” according to: Use Touch ID on Mac.

Does that sound like what is happening? If that isn’t the issue, try removing your fingerprint from your Mac and adding it back again.

We hope this helps!

This did not work for me, unfortunately. I have been having the same issue for the past three days. Before that, I could use Touch ID to get into my Mac and not I have to type the password, just like everyone else. Yes, every couple of days, I had to re-enter my password. But then I could use Touch ID again. Not now. I followed all the instructions here, and it still didn't work. I have to type in my password all the time. And when I try to click the box to allow Touch ID at login, I'm getting the same biometrics error message as everyone else. Help please - this seems to have affected numerous people for much of April. Thank you.

I replied to this thread a few days ago to share that I was also having these issues. Unfortunately I am still experiencing these issues with the Touch ID, and thought I would add another detail to this frustration. Almost every time that I attempt to type in my password, it randomly deletes itself in the middle of my typing. This causes me to have to type in my password multiple times before finally being able to get into my laptop. Has anyone been able to find a solution to the Touch ID issue or had a similar issue when typing in your password?

Thank you, FireSTORM132. That's a good catch.

It's important to note here for all concerned that macOS is very capable of taking care of its own security if allowed to do so. By that I mean that it has a malware removal tool built in, and system integrity protection (sip) as well. If kept up to date with the latest security updates, macOS will remain rock solid.

When we introduce active anti-virus and anti malware applications into the machine, very often things will take a downward turn and performance suffers. It is never a good idea to introduce additional av software or even multiple av packages (!!) into the macOS environment.

If you suspect that malware has been introduced into your machine, by all means run a scanner (Malwarebytes is favored in the communities) and see what it finds. But it's best practice to stay away from any av package that runs and stays active in the background all the time.

Just sayin'.

Out.

EDIT - oh, yeah. Stay away from application that claim to "clean up" and speed up your Mac. Those are generally considered here to be the equivalent of malware on their own.
