New Airpod2 and the pods connect with audio, however, the both pod's microphones will not work. This must be a phone settings as I did not have a problem connecting to another iphone and use my microphone. What do I need to do to correct?

Try this:
Open the Settings app and go to the Bluetooth section. Next to the AirPods entry on the list of devices, you should see an “i” icon inside of a circle. Tap this, then select microphone, and set it to either left, right or automatic. Try switching it back and forth.
Then, test with the Voice Memos app.
