I use combination CTRL+SHIFT+PowerButton or just close the lid of my macbook to lock the screen.
It used to work great, and it still works but not great. Sometimes either of methods don't trigger lock screen, which ruins the idea of locking itself. One day I will find out that some just opened my laptop and get all the data from it.

I've tried "Reset the SMC on computers that have the T2 chip" option, which seemed to me right.
Don't know if I've actually reseted it. Lock seems to work, will see.
I will update my observation during next month.
