“Allow Siri When Locked”

Despite allowing Siri when locked, I’m still unable to check messages, read texts, etc.

I have tried turning off the setting, restarting my phone and re-enabling the setting - but it still doesn’t work. What else can I do?

Hi there, SuesRomeo! Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

After reviewing your post, it sounds like you are running into some issues using Siri with your iPhone locked. We definitely understand that can be a concern and we'd love to help. You’ve taken some great troubleshooting steps already. Thanks for trying that.

First, we'd like to clarify that messages are read by Siri when using AirPods or compatible Beats. This article has all the information:

Announce Messages with Siri on AirPods

With that being said, does your iPhone respond to “Hey Siri” at all? This page has examples of what you can ask Siri to do for you:

What can I ask Siri?

If Siri is not responding at all, the steps in this article may help with general Siri performance issues as well:

If "Hey Siri" isn't working on your iPhone or iPad.

Please let us know if you have follow-up questions about this issue.

Have a great day!

SuesRomeo, thanks for answering those questions. From what you are describing, your iPhone is set up properly and Siri is working as expected. When your iPhone is locked and you ask Siri to read a new message you've received, one of two things will occur:

  1. If using some form of additional listening device, like AirPods or headphones, your messages will be read out loud, without having to unlock the iPhone. Or:
  2. You will be asked to unlock the iPhone first, if using no Bluetooth or connected listening accessories.

This is expected behavior and does not indicate an issue with your iPhone or Siri. Having said that, we definitely understand that this is not how you wish this process to occur. We welcome all thoughts, comments and suggestions, on your iPhone & Siri or any other Apple products and services. Send us feedback on this here: http://apple.co/Feedback

Thanks for getting back with us and answering everyone's questions, SuesRomeo. We're happy to continue working on this unexpected issue with you. Does your iPhone currently have a passcode or Face ID set up, or are there no security features in place? If not, please set one of those up and let us know if Siri's behavior changes. Also, do you happen to have any other iPhones that you could test this behavior on?

We appreciate your help in narrowing this down further with us! Have a wonderful day.

It is option #2 that I am getting.

I completely disagree that is normal because 2 updates ago Apple added the feature “Access Siri reading messages when locked”

This I know because all of a sudden, Siri stopped reading messages and when I researched it, I was pointed toward this setting to enable Siri when locked.

Then it worked again until now when all of a sudden - despite the setting set to allow Siri when locked - it doesn’t work again.
