My 12 auto dims to around 50% brightness even with all the settings for that turned off.
I have accessibility - display and text size - auto-brightness turned off
I have dark mode , night shift , True Tone turned off
In display & brightness I have brightness turned all the way up and appearance on light mode.
phone still auto dims. Is there another setting somewhere or is this phone broken ?

Settings/Accessibility/Face ID & Attention/Attention Aware features. If the phone does not see your face it dims the display when this is on.
Also, the screen will dim 30 seconds before automatic lock, as a warning. That can’t be changed.
