Test your credentials on the mail provider's web mail interface, check whether your mail provider requires tokens to log in, check whether your mail provider requires additional steps to login as Google GMail can require, then confirm that what you're entering for settings within the Mail app configuration process are correct as determined by your mail provider and their mail server configuration, and then check with your mail provider support folks.
