Apple Pencil 2 stopped charging on Zulu case.

After working fine for many months with the Zugu iPad Pro Alpha case, the Apple Pencil 2 stopped charging. It would still charge when the iPad was removed from the case and the pencil was directly attached to the iPad.

After much back and forth, and getting a new case, what I discovered is that the Apple Pencil 2 was warped. It had a slight concave curve on the flat side. When I contacted Apple support, they insisted I must have sat on it or otherwise damaged it. But this never happened. I have always taken good care of the pencil and it was never subjected to anything besides normal use.

Their claim that it is impossible for the pencil to warp defies credulity. As it has been reported that some pencils shipped bent.

‘My theory is that there is a design flaw. Because of the flat side on the pencil, the orientation of the pencil relative to the hand hold is always exactly the same orientation, if you want to use the touch feature on the pencil. So, depending on the user’s grip, the pencil faces the same constant downward pressure from the user’s hold on the pencil. It never varies as any other writing utensil would, including the Apple Pencil 1. With other utensils, the orientation of the utensil doesn’t matter as much as it will work in any rotational direction. Thus, the downward force is evened out without any one orientation receiving constant pressure. And that, in other writing utensils, the pressure evens out, with the orientation being averaged out randomly.

I use the Pencil 2 a lot. I am professional illustrator and have really adapted to using the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil 2 as my primary tools. I suggest Apple take a look into my crack pot theory.

Clearly the pencil can warp given enough pressure. The question is if the pressure from constant but normal use over time is enough to warp it. My Apple Pencil warped over 4 months of use.

Well, it wasn't accidental damage. It was normal usage. Unless you mean to imply all damage is accidental.

And it was covered by the warranty. They replaced the pencil as it was still covered under Apple Care, which would be the warranty in this case.

I made this post, not to resolve my issue, as it is already resolved in the sense that the Pencil was replaced, albeit minus the custom engraving. I made this post to bring the issue to the attention of Apple and at the suggestion of the Apple Genius Bar employee who helped me. Hopefully someone responsible for the engineering and QA of the pencil design will look into it and see if what I am suggesting is possible. If not, oh well. But, I would think that, in order to maintain quality in their products, they should consider the suggestion that perhaps their testing didn't account for long term pressure on the flat side over normal usage.

It is the knee jerk presumption that any warping has to be due to accidental damage and not possibly a design flaw that is problematic for me. It makes it a Catch-22. Warranty doesn't cover accidental damage. All damage is accidental. Therefore, the warranty never covers damage?
