TextEdit constantly crashing when deleting line of text

Has to be an Apple font problem.

But these were all installed last weekend and haven't been touched - I can't touch them.

Adobe now accesses local fonts within the layout document folder to make them available in the layout.

Most apps like Adobe's if they have issues with crashing - it's a font issue.

I didn't renew my Suitcase font management utility last fall because of Apple's move to prevent font management - what's the point of having a font management utility if you can't control the fonts that choke your font menus?

Clearly TextEdit is incapable of handling the gigabytes of fonts that Apple chokes our systems with.

This is crap. Plain and simple. Crap.

Hi arronlin, thanks for the info - I believe I was able to manually remove any system fonts in all previous versions - just Big Sur is now the Big Kludge.

Scroll down your font menus to the font Noto...

I may have missed 1 or a dozen or when copying and pasting this together - but the point is VERY VERY VERY clear.

This is JUST ONE FONT. There are literally hundreds of families I DON'T WANT. This is insane beyond all comprehension.

What we need is one or more of the following:

• Apple allows us to manage ALL fonts except the vital SYSTEM FONTS like keyboard, Lucida, whatever I don't care - but by using FontBook to do so - I TOTALLY get that we should not be manually dragging System fonts out [I never truly liked doing that anyways but was forced to do so to keep my font menus under control]
• Apple ONLY shows these in fonts in THEIR APPS. So, quite frankly if I have to give up TextEdit and use a more professional doc editor for simple things like job notes and job timesheets, I will do so, I will avoid TextEdit altogether given its unreliability as noted above - it cannot even handle an Apple font - a FRESHLY INSTALLED APPLE FONT - so it is too unstable for the real world
• Apple allows ALL OTHER app developers to turn off all of their fonts in their menus - i.e. I open any Adobe app and I can go to the font menu and I can say "Hide System Fonts" and voila - no Apple fonts show up. I realize this won't happen because - well... Apple. If they aren't going to play nicely with fonts by choking us with them, they certainly aren't going to allow app vendors to conceal them
• or, Apple builds two completely separate OSs - bear with me here... let's call them Big Sur A and Big Sur B - Big Sur A and the user cannot even Admin their own computer - they have to go into Apple to do anything at the System level - including installing apps, adding user accounts, deactivating fonts. And Big Sur B SuperUser - for professionals who know how to tinker and want to tinker, and want to be able to hash/bin/slash/c prompt the **** out of their system just to do a simple thing like... deactivate fonts.

I'm tired. I have to get some work done today. I know I will lose an hour or so just from having to get through all of Apple's fonts. So I am not working in an ideal environment right now, hence my ire in these posts.

While I do appreciate the input - it's all rather futile, including my posts, if we simply cannot use our Systems to the extent we need to do so. If I do not use FaceTime, I can remove it from the doc. I believe I can also delete the app, I don't know, not that important, but I can at least manage my apps.

The emoji-loving Gen-X, or is it Gen-Y, Gen-Z now? with all of their cuddly little Apple apps who are blissfully unaware of just how many fonts they have to play with, have won.

And when Apple turns the desktop OS into one with their phone and iPad OS, it will be the end of real-world use of Macintoshes altogether. They will just be toys. And my grandkids will look to me and think, "Ya, he used to do 'typed out pages' or something, now he just babbles on about how wonderful fonts were, prior to 2020. That was the year they all almost died or something. Wanna play Gizmoddo again for the fifblibberty-doo-dah time today?"

Not having a particularly good week with the Apple OS.

Sign-in still thinks I am in Cornerbrook, NF, when I'm in Toronto - which was confirmed when I rebuilt my MacBookPro last Sunday yet still persists. Date/Time clearly set to Toronto. Went through a whole "Trust this Mac" then "Trust this browser" just overly-complicating everything in general.

Quite frankly too busy trying to get work done to play with all of the idiocyncracies Apple is throwing in the road in front of me. Just going to drive over them and be done with it for a while.

Nope.

It was fine for maybe 24 hours tops.

Now, right back to being the craptastically unstable piece of garbage it is.

Can anyone help with TextEdit?

I simple need to be able to copy and paste content in a rich text format page with it crashing every 30 seconds.

Has been this unstable for the past 6-9 months of Apple's recent OS releases = less than satisfactory.

OK, here it is...

To confirm a few things:

• new install of OS Big Sur from thumb drive last weekend [which is why an SMC reset should not have been needed, but it was]
• have installed Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office, FileMaker, Chrome and Drop Box
• EtreCheck "error" - not currently using TimeMachine - what's the point of backing up such an unstable system?
• TextEdit crashes when deleting multiple lines of copy - it is a rich text format using Apple's own Monaco font
