TextEdit constantly crashing when deleting line of text

Hi,

Very tired of this.

This is a simple text editor and it crashes constantly.

I have time sheets for all project in Text Edit - all information logged and included with invoices. I have to use this as subcontractors send their invoices in a variety of formats - I need one standardized text-based format of all info.

I have them formatted in Monaco - easiest to read, cannot confuse numerals especially.

But, when I wipe an old doc to add new, highlighting multiple lines of text and hitting delete. CRASH.

I am using one of Apple's bajillions of craptostic fonts - fonts I cannot self-manage - so there should be no issue here. It's not like I'm installing a Type 1 PostScript font from 1998 here.

So what gives?

I use Mail, Safari and TextEdit mostly - rarely any other Apple apps - but these are the bane of my existence. Mail is crap, Safary barely scraping by - often using Chrome. If they were as complicated as Adobe's Creative Suite apps I'd cut them some slack.

But - plain formatted text?

Pathetic.

And, with an absolutely brand new, wiped and reinstalled OS - Big Sur. Seem to recall this existing prior to Big Sur, but it sure ain't fixed under Big Sur either.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and check again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

No change. Booted into Recovery mode - ran disk check on the boot drive, not the other ones that show up.

I did completely reformat my hard drive last weekend - thanks to your tip OldToad in another thread to install the OS on a thumb drive for which I thank you.

Clearly it is a font issue - and since there are only a bajillion Apple fonts installed - bogging down my system - this is most likely the issue. Until Apple reverts to allow us to manage these fonts - and cut our Adobe app font menus down to something normal - it is going to continue getting worse and worse. Even a call to Apple Support a few months back the person was not aware you could not longer manage system fonts with FontBook.

I use TextEdit for all projects - just plain notes - albeit rich text formatted in case I need to add indents in notes on the projects. I keep a timesheet doc and a notes doc with each project. I find it easier than using bloatware like Word.

And Mac Mail with its crap 2004-era prefs window that doesn't resize - no hard drive reformatting/reinstallation is going to help with that.

Will continue to send bug reports to Apple but for what I pay for Macintosh systems - and I *am* thinking of a new M1 MacBookPro next month - you'd think Apple would give high-end users the ability to do what they need to do. We've only paid Apple's way since the early 1990s.

I can easily forego all of the emojis for a system that is more reliable.

Thanks.

YOU CANNOT DELETE OR OTHERWISE DEACTIVATE ANY FONT WITH FONTBOOK IN BIG SUR.

This is the bane of my extistence and will continue to be the bane of real uses from now on because of this incredibly short-sighted move by Apple to constrain our ability to customize our systems for our needs. While throwing a million new emojis at us with each "update".

Sorry - but this is being beaten to death and is of no use if Apple will not permit font management as it should be.

So, we're stuck with a bloated OS with a bajillion craptastic fonts that choke even their own apps - not to mention my ACTUAL REAL WORKING APPS that I need.

A simple text app that Apple supplies doesn't even work properly.

It's pathetic.

All OSs prior to Big Sur you had control over a large majority of these fonts.

You could either deactivate with Font Book, or if you were more adventurous, you could actually go into the System->Fonts folder and manually remove unwanted fonts. I would then add the removed fonts to my Suitcase font management utility so I had still had access to them - just not bogging down my system or choking my apps' font menus - THAT IS THE CRUX OF THIS.

I purged my previous systems of a lot of those crap fonts - totally unnecessary fonts - completely choked my app menus.

I know full-well how to manage fonts - but Apple has now taken even this away from us - all the while shoving a million more fonts down our throats and I am sick and tired of the instability, unreliability and lack of acknowledgement from Apple as to how this is impacting REAL users. Not users who just email, surf and txt their friends, but people who use Macs for their living and cannot stomach the

I do not want to end up like the typesetters I replaced in the late 80s who stood by their Linotronic 2000X-or-whatever from 1981 and refused to update their software and equipment and died out because of it.

I expect - when I pay for current systems - I want a new M1 MacBook - and I stay on top of all releases - but I also expect these tools to work properly in the environment I require for my livelihood. And because it is Macintosh - I am paying through the nose for this - not a $600 Acer piece of crap - $4000 for a top-of-the-line MacBook [CDN$].

This is no longer happening.

Why?

<hugs>

I don't know about the emoji generation. All I know is that every time I have to work with a Win10 system, it makes me stop complaining about my Mac systems (I have had 8 over the last several years).

Interestingly, I do publishing and book layout, and the number of fonts really doesn't bother me. Most of them aren't that useful to me, anyway. I stick with 5-7 for just about everything. Only my graphic designers go crazy with a trick font for a cover or magazine layout. And I reign them in to keep the load down.
