I have the keyboard shortcuts set as default but they don't let me capture the screen. This is such an essential function for everyday work. I keep having to go back to my PC for it and I don't like that I can't quickly capture the screen on the Mac.
I don't seem to have the new screen capture app. I briefly downloaded some apps from app store but they didn't work either.
My Mojave installs have it. Do SHIFT COMMAND 5 and see if you get the Screenshot control panel at the bottom of the screen:

What shortcut keys are you using? and have they ever worked?
You say the shortcuts are the default, but is that because you have not (intentionally) changed them or have you checked the list in keyboard preferences and confirmed they are the same or clicked on "Restore Defaults"?

Strange. Have you installed any third-party anti-virus or so-called "cleaning" apps? They can make a hot mess of Apple's built-in functions.
Thanks!! Although the shortcuts still don't work, finding the app allows me to capture stuff now. Still not as nice as the pc version it seems. Maybe I need to get used to it.
