My iPhone 8 Plus will not allow new set up in English language--has it been hijacked?

My phone was charging. I unplugged it from the charger to begin using it and I was asked for the passcode; as I began to put in the code the phone locked me out and showed a message asking me to enter the code again in 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes, I tried to enter the code again and before I could finish I received another message saying the phone was now locked for 15 minutes.

I tried to turn off my phone but it would not allow me to—the screen slider used to turn off the phone would not slide.

I went online to figure out how to turn off my locked phone but couldn’t find an answer applicable to my particular situation. I went online to my iCould account and erased my phone.

The phone now acted as though it was new and gave me prompts to set it up. Before I could choose English as my language (the first prompt), an Asian-looking language was “chosen” and the next screen appeared, in that language. I can’t turn off my phone, and I can’t use the back arrow—I can only proceed in the “Asian” language.

I finally figured out how to force my phone to turn off (press and quickly let go of the up volume button, press and quickly let go of the down volume button, press and hold the side power button until the Apple logo appears), but I still have the same issue trying to set up my phone again in English—the phone is choosing the “Asian-looking” language and will allow no other.

Does anyone recognize what’s going on with my phone and have any advice for how it can be fixed?

Hi, you will probably have to reset the iPhone , you will need a Mac or pc with iTunes (newer versions of macOS use finder)

Connect your iPhone to the computer, if iTunes opens close the app.

Now on your iPhone Press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, and press and hold the Side button until your device reboots. Continue holding the Side button, even after you see the Apple logo appear. Release the Side button once you see the Connect to iTunes logo appear on the iPhone’s display. iTunes should now open and will give you the option to Update or Restore, choose Restore this will wipe your iPhone and allow you to set it up again. Please note you will need your Apple ID and password for the setup.
