Can not make New File under File menu in Big Sur

Can not make New File under File menu in Big Sur. This looks to be a permission issue but I cannot change permissions while logged in as Admin in the finder or with Terminal's chmod command. I could make New Files before updating the OS. This looks to be a bug in Big Sur.

I have a new M1 Mac Mini Big Sur 11.2.3 Apple support suggested a work around by creating a New File on the desktop. Any help would be great. Thanks

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and see if the problem persists. Also try the key combination of Shift + Command + N. Reboot normally and check again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

After restating the problem, I still don't know where you are trying to create a folder.

I can only guess it is within the home folder since you talked about the permissions, but I'm still not sure.

There are lots of places you can't modify, but you should be able to create a folder anywhere in your home folder.

I also don't know exactly what the Sharing & Permissions section fully states. It appears your user account has read/write to the home folder and the "others," whatever those may be.

What about the group and what permissions does it have.

How about everyone?

What does it state at the top of the list? Does it state you can read and write, or does it state that you have custom access.

I am hoping Apple will see this post and forward the issue to Big Sur engineering.

Apple doesn't monitor this forum for those types of things.

I'm not sure what Big Sur engineering would be able to do. We haven't managed to figure out why you are seeing the problem.

This can't create a New Folder issue is on a New Mac Mini M1 with Big Sur. This Mac has one Admin Owner user account. Using the Admin account I cannot create a "New Folder" from the Finder. New folder is dimmed. The Home folder and all others have Reed/Write admin privileges. I could create folders before the last upgrade on Big Sur OS. Using Cntrl Click I can make a New Folder on the desktop and drag it into any folder.

Here is what I have tried.

  • Power down and unplugging the Mac. Reboot several times.
  • Ran Disk First Aid on all Volumes and Folders shown.
  • Tried to change permission for Everyone using Finder File Get Info and this resulted in a alert window "The operation can't be completed because you don't have the necessary permission" !
  • In Terminal tried using the chmod command on folders and this resulted in same alert window.
  • Contacted Apple support. Their suggestion was to make a new folder on the desktop and move it to the new location as a Work Around!

I am hoping Apple will see this post and forward the issue to Big Sur engineering.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
