changing administrators name

i recently bought a 2012 mac book pro and the previous owner gave me the log on credentials.However, the computer keeps asking for an administrators id and password when I tried to change the username to mine,. how can i fix that

You should be able to change all those in System Preferences -> Users & Groups. Make sure to unlock the settings on the bottom otherwise it will not let you change them, then right click on the admin's name and select 'Advanced Options...' . You can change everything there, name and passwords. Make sure to lock settings on the bottom again once you're done.
