Erasing an ipad

I returned a faulty iPad which had crashed and was not responding to my efforts to reset it. The seller now wants my passcode so he can open the device. I am reluctant because there might be some of my personal info, say notes, or email still on the iPad. It isn’t entirely clear to me exactly what the erase option actually erases. Would it be safer to ask this (dodgy?) seller to return the iPad to me so I can erase any info and reset the passcode? The iPad is a 5th generation one.

thanks

Read this document about What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch [or if you received one that had not been erased] - "Use these steps to remove your personal information from a device, even if you don't have it anymore."
