Mail (Big Sur) set to check Manually but it checks automatically all the time

I want to check my email ONCE per day. Unfortunately Mac Mail constantlyserves up new mail, even though I have the Preferences set to "Check for new messages Manually". I need to have Mail open to work, but I don't want to see any new messages as it's very distracting and bad for productivity. How do I turn this off?

Somebody else asked this question but I am reposting since there was no answer. How can I get this to work?

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and set Mail to check manually. Reboot normally and test to see if the manual checking is the default.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
